A strong element in Alice is that everyone hides a dark side. From the most innocent seeming person to the person who is obviously dark, everyone has a side of them that they don't want anyone else to see. Alice didn't even know about her dark side until she was put into a situation where she had to use it.

Another big theme in the book is the feeling of being trapped. Alice and Hatcher were both trapped in that mental hospital for over eight years. They couldn't go anywhere, and they didn't have a way of escape. Everyone can be trapped by something. Physical, mental, emotional... There's always something that may keep us trapped. It could even be our own insecurities that are holding us back.

Friendship is a huge thing in Alice as well. Hatcher and Alice only have each other in the mental hospital, and they demonstrate as the story progresses that friendship is one of the most important things in life.
